Jon Stewart’s Finest Moment

August 21, 2009 By: Category: Politics

I’ve been trying to contain political stuff to my personal blog, on account of how Awkward Press is happy to take your money no matter what your political affiliation. But this is the single best discussion I have seen on health care reform and I encourage everyone to take 25 minutes to watch it today. I have no idea why it is up to a comedy show to present an intelligent debate on this topic. But, America! America crazy.

I love what Stewart says at the end, about how he can’t understand how her mind works. I totally know those people. Where their opinions are being generated from a completely different plane of reality. And I don’t know how we, as Americans, can get past that disconnect.

The thought that the American government would ever want to secretly kill all the old people seems ludicrous to me. The fact that anyone is treating this as a serious discussion topic seems ludicrous to me. I cannot imagine what it would be like to be so mistrustful of our elected officials that I believed they were secretly trying to kill old people. Now, I’m not completely naive. I don’t think our representatives always have our best interests at heart, what with all the money they have to raise from private interests just to keep doing their jobs. But to think they are using health care reform as an excuse to satisfy their blood lust? That is some other level, all right.

  1. I agree. This is perhaps Stewart’s finest moment.

This woman clearly thought that Stewart was a rube who wouldn’t be prepared by actually reading the part of the bill that they were discussing. Well, Stewart was discussing it. McCaughey was just making sh@t up.

Every claim she made was exposed as BS as soon as the actual text of the bill was read aloud. And still, people believe this crap.

  2. I don’t think anyone honestly believes the bit about killing old people. Like you said, the idea of the Obama administration wanting to kill the elderly is such a ludicrous idea it’s not even worth discussing. It’s just a scare tactic, and a massively cynical one being waged by people who damn well know better.

  3. I would be surprised if Betsy McCaughey honestly believes that Obama wants to kill old people, but I think there are plennnnnty of rank n’ rile Republicans who think it’s real.

Note: I just wrote rank n’ rile by mistake, but it’s the kind of awesome mistake that I daren’t correct.

  5. Oh, and more on that… fuck you, Joe Scarborough. Medicare isn’t “going bankrupt.” A government program doesn’t “go bankrupt,” it just needs more funding. Yes, as more people enter Medicare, we need to put more money into Medicare. And if none of us are wasting money on profit-based insurance, we can put a little more tax money in for Medicare.
